Connecticut-based Bravo pet foods company has issued a nationwide recall for several of its pet food brands because of possible salmonella contamination. The Food and Drug Administration says the recall involves Raw Food Diet Bravo Turkey Blend for Dogs & Cats, Bravo Blends All-Natural Chicken Blend Diet for Dogs & Cats, Premium Turkey Formula Bravo Balance Raw Diet and Bravo Blends All Natural Chicken Blend Diet for Dogs & Cats.
Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and also poses health risks for humans handling the product. Pets infected with salmonella may be lethargic, have diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets may only develop decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
The recall comes after routine testing by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture detected salmonella in at least two lots of the products affected. The FDA says the recalled products were distributed nationwide beginning on November 14, 2013 to distributors, retail stores, internet retailers and directly to consumers. Affected products can be identified using the “batch ID code” and “best used by date” printed on the side of the container. (see photos of product packages here)
Bravo has also voluntarily withdrawn a number of other of its products out of an abundance of caution. (Visit the company website here and get more info from the FDA here) Consumers can contact Bravo foods toll free at (866) 922-9222 Mon-Fri 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (ET)
